I came into this course with a years experience in a monolingual classroom. However, I went into that year of experience with a crash course in teaching within a classroom and only a few times of actually teaching english as a foreign language. Having “taught” in other capacities before, I found I adapted naturally in the classroom and worked well with students. I had example formats to follow, which helped significantly in planning lessons, but I felt like I was lacking in truly “knowing” my subject. To be a better teacher, I wanted to make sure I had a firm handle on grammar my students needed to know and then teaching that grammar within a tefl classroom. I felt I needed a refresher course to guide me in being able to teach grammar in a concise, clean, and easy to follow pattern so that my students could be successful and I wouldn’t confuse them in trying to unpack too much at once. This course provided a nice foundation for being a successful teacher of english (as a foreign language). I feel like I understand my own grammar much better and more importantly, I feel like I can explain basic grammar concepts to a non-native speaker in terms they can easily understand. Additionally, I feel like this course sharpened my teaching skills in reinforcing (and affirming) prior knowledge, organization, and format while also challenging me to make sure my lessons are well thought out, feasible, and effective. I think I’ve improved in my ability to integrate a grammatical point with appropriate fun activities to balance out my lessons. I wanted to take this course to round out my Fulbright experience and to ensure that I had “all my ducks in a row” concerning tefl and tefl opportunities. I know I’m more credible having now had both the hands-on teaching experience and the bookwork from this course. While I’m looking into other professional opportunities in addition to tefl, I hope to continue teaching (be it as a tutor or in a classroom) in Hawaii. In a few years, I will probably be abroad again and I plan to utilize more fully my tefl experience. In either way, Hawaii or abroad, I will be prepared to teach english as a foreign language!
