One of the most important things I have gained from this course is learning the importance of structuring lessons and how to go about structuring them. Before the course I was relatively clueless in relation to such questions, so the units on the different kinds of straight arrow/boomerang lessons as well as the lesson plans I have had to complete myself have been of vital importance to me. In future, this will hopefully provide me with the foundations I need in order to create strong, clear and comprehensive lesson plans. I am sure that I will look over certain course units from time to time at the beginning of my teaching experience in order to refresh my memory on these things! The structure of lessons has not been the only thing I have gained from this course, as I have also learnt that there is a vast and potentially limitless amount of information that can be channeled for use in the classroom environment. While technological restrictions may limit the means of the students in certain instances, the creative teacher can always find ways to make the classroom a lively and interesting environment with the right kind of care and patience. From the course I have learnt that choosing information which may be of interest to pupils in the classroom would not be difficult for me. The more challenging aspect would be learning how to integrate the limitless information into my lesson plans so that the pupils can fully benefit in relation to what the information can give them in terms of understanding english. From this perspective I have learned that it is very lazy and uncreative on behalf of the teacher to ever complain about there being a lack of resources available. A little bit of invention, effort and imagination can go a long way! Another thing I have learnt through the course is the basics of grammar, especially in relation to the past/present/future tenses. I had never really studied such concepts before, however as the course progressed I learnt that there are many repetitive patterns in the tenses. While teaching grammar may be a challenge, I don’t think it will be as challenging as I thought it would be prior to my studying the tenses in this course. Before this course I studied a module in linguistics at university, so I believe that this module provided me with a sound basis in relation to how language through signs constructs meaning. This university module coupled with the grammar units in this course will hopefully provide me with a deep enough understanding to be able to teach english grammar to foreign students in an able and interesting way.
