As a native english speaker, I always thought there wasn't much I needed to learn before teaching - I was good at grammar, I've done translation work, and even tutored a few times to have a little bit of confidence within myself. But when it came down signing up for this program and getting my certificate for tesol, I learned much more than I could have imagined!
I've learned a how to be a teacher, not a speaker of a native language. I have seen that there is more to teaching students then being able to break down a sentence or answering a tough question. The ability to work with students of all levels in an interesting learning environment is really the key to help anyone learn a new language. Language and grammar books are nice to learn from, but really getting into the language - speaking when you know you're wrong or having an activity that doesn't always make sense in the beginning, but you're having so much fun that it feels like things are coming naturally.
These ideas and understandings of teaching are what I have gained from this course, and I plan to use them in every one of my lessons. Creating lesson plans that are not only a great learning experience, but just an overall great experience in themselves is what I want to create!
