I have chosen this topic because I can relate it to my experience. I was driven to taking a tefl course out of curiosity, wanting to know what else I could learn. Many teachers believe and could argue it out that with experience one does not need a teaching course or that a native speaker can also be a language teacher. I believe that they will for sure in time get to develop their skills and experience the different situations but it is better to be proactive than try to work out situations when they have already happened. Such a course equips a teacher and prepares them to meet certain situations. Looking at some of the advantages; 1. A tefl course equips you with the knowledge and skills you need to teach english as a second language. This is very different as compared to teaching english, i.e. grammar, vocabulary etc. to native speakers. A teacher teaching english to students as a second language needs to take several things into consideration. For example, the kind of problems the students may encounter in class and the teacher being able to come up with solutions before hand, how best to explain grammar to students whose native language totally differs from english, how to deal with the different levels and age groups in a class, to name a few. 2. A tefl certificate is one of the requirements that a teacher would need to have to live and work abroad. This means that the authorities of a given country find it secure to have a teacher trained on issues that they may encounter beforehand. 3. A tefl course gives the teacher the opportunity to immerse himself/herself in a foreign culture. This is already an advantage because the teacher is able to experience and practice directly with the students. It is also easier to get employed when one is already in the country. These are just a few examples why tefl is important. There are different ways how one could go about doing a tefl course. For example, taking an intensive course in the teacher's native country or abroad or doing an online course. People who have done an these courses will give the advantages and disadvantages why they chose what they did. Having done an online course, I would say I found it equally effective as I was able to apply what I learnt directly in my profession. I was able to study and work which was practical. The only disadvantage I found with this course was that the teacher did have a chance to be observed. Here are examples of comments given by some graduates (reference; http://www.teflonline.com/comments_graduates.php); Sam Garvin from usa; "The quality of teflOnline.com is nothing short of remarkable. It is intuitive, insightful, and offers examples that are clear and concise. Videos within the modules were great examples of classroom structure and format. My tutor was prompt and knowledgeable. Overall I give the online program an A+!" Kristine Barth from Milan, italy: "teflOnline.com was a valuable course, very good for preparing and training new teachers, whereas for experienced teachers, it's a good review. [It] helped me and confirmed the things that I had learned in practice, giving me some extra ideas and hints for improving my teaching methods. My tutor's feedback was insightful and very useful. As an experienced teacher, I highly recommend this course to both novices and experienced teachers." May Tueny from Beirut, Lebanon; " My studies with teflOnline.com assisted me in many ways: to view and understand the role of the teacher, to teach the different skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking with the communicative language teaching approach, and to function more professionally in the classroom. Also, it enabled me to be aware of the teaching resources networks available online, and broaden my knowledge and contacts in a globalized world." These are just examples of teachers who have benefited from this course. I would like to conclude that, it is very important for teachers who intent to teach english as a second language to do a tefl,CELTA, tesol or any other similar course whether they are already teachers with many years of experience or just starting.
