Although I have been teaching for quite awhile, all my knowledge has been culled from other people's teaching ideas/experiences as well as my own observations and successful or failed attempts. Going over the course material helped me to know why many successful ideas work so well and where many failed attempts went wrong. Especially regarding teaching techniques and lesson planning, I feel like I more understand the theory behind the practical aspects I had previously used. The result is since the theory is now there, I am hoping to use more of the learned techniques to make my classes both more interesting and more useful for my students. Before, I might have been afraid to change something that had worked well in the past for fear of it not working well.
Secondly, the course has definitely helped in the review of my sadly lapsed grammar. We rarely use grammar in the oral classes we teach, so there was always a fear students would ask us questions we were unable to answer. Now the fear is gone.
Finally, I am hoping to use some of the ideas on pronunciation to improve my students speaking and, yes, because of this course, I plan to improve my knowledge of the pronunciation marks so I can better serve my students' needs.
