In my 7 years experience as a teacher here in Jordan, I find the most important thing in a classroom is how you, the teacher, manages her/his class, the students and yourself. As we are all different in many ways, students are not all the same, even though they are in the same class and are the same age group. Each student needs and desires special attention provided by only one or many teachers. A child's behavior gives teachers an insight on the student's background, surroundings and home life. Certain students are not controlled by their parents therefore feel that teachers shouldn't control them either. As a teacher, it is important to set ground rules from the first day of class. It is extremely important that students know you are there to teach them and you will not tolerate any behavior that's unacceptable. Students must know that if the rules are broken there will be consequences to pay. Some students don't believe in following rules because their parents are not disciplining them correctly. Certain students will test the teacher's tolerance level in different things like calling out, not doing homework, eating in class, taking something that doesn't belong to them, sleeping, bring toys/cell phones to school or not listening to the teacher. Such students need to be given a warning using a firm tone. Should things like this be done again, you have fairly given the student a warning and further action needs to be taken. Students need to know that you follow up with warnings otherwise they won't take you seriously. From the beginning, students need to know your expectations. I think the best way to have classroom management is to treat each student like they are special and misbehaving will upset you and think differently of them. From my own experience, being the student's friend mean more to them than being their teacher. By establishing this relationship with students, you are controlling the classroom without having to punish, embarrass, or discipline anyone. teachers have to know how to reach each individual student and use that to her advantage in controlling the class. teachers must have classroom helpers, and give students responsibilities within the class to show they are valuable and special. teachers can also manage their classrooms by having posters with student's names on them and whenever a student behaves a star is given next to their name. This works for younger students because the older they get, the less discipline they need inside the classroom. Praising students and awarding them certificates encourages students to behave in the classroom. Students strive to please the teacher, especially if there are prizes, or rewards given out. Arranging seats in the classroom is also important in how the classroom is managed. Students should be paired with someone that will not distract them. Having students sit where they want will cause more noise and less learning in the classroom. Classroom management and management of student conduct are skills that teachers acquire and hone over time. These skills almost never "jell" until after a minimum of few years of teaching experience. To be sure, effective teaching requires considerable skill in managing the myriad of tasks and situations that occur in the classroom each day. Skills such as effective classroom management are central to teaching and require "common sense," consistency, a sense of fairness, and courage. These skills also require that teachers understand in more than one way the psychological and developmental levels of their students. (The above paragraph was taken from Education Information for New and Future teachers) New teachers will face problems in classroom management if they don't research it, or have field time in classrooms before becoming a teacher. Even experienced teachers face problems managing classrooms because of their weak personalities and when this is sensed by students, the classroom will turn into a playground. In the end, it's how the student feels about you that will improve his behavior or act –out in class. I find that when students like their teacher, they make progress in their studies and behave beautifully. If the student dislikes the teacher, he will do things to annoy her, not want to study and not pay attention in class. Despite all the research on classroom management, I think the best way and the easiest way is to make the student love you, so they can then love the class and love to please you. I have tried this with many naughty students and I found that it really does work.
