english teachers are in high demand all across the world, as well as in native speaking countries. The opportunity to teach is an opportunity that many have thought about but too few actually take that step and do it. As I looked in to teaching abroad I concluded that there were four basic reasons to take a certified Teaching english as a Foreign Language (tefl) course. The first major reason is that a tefl course provides the skills necessary to live and work in another country. During a tough economic climate being able to live and work anywhere is something that is greatly desired. By completing a tefl course you now have an opportunity to travel anywhere in the world to find work (and not just work but typically good paying work). With a growing international business market, knowing english has never been more important and it looks to continue to grow in importance with each passing day. Companies from countries such as china and brazil conduct business in english because it is a common language. Students need to know english to get jobs with these companies and many companies that are not yet global want english speakers so that they can expand internationally. Secondly, teaching internationally always the opportunity to make a greater impact in the lives of others. During this multimedia age that we live in, every day we are bombarded with images of hurting people, people that lack food and shelter and the basic skills that will allow themselves to gain access to a better future for themselves and their family. By teaching english in a foreign country you are providing a tangible skill that will help those people that need the most help. Even if your day job is with the upper class in a certain country, your free time can be spent blessing those that are less fortunate in the community. Thirdly, by teaching abroad you have a unique opportunity to for growth and understanding in a cross cultural context. By spending your whole life living in the US (or any other country), you miss out on the uniqueness and greatness of the various cultures in the world. When you live in a new culture, mingle with the locals, barter at a local bizarre, and ride on public transportation, you experience things that you could never learn from a movie or a book. These insights are solely reserved for the cross cultural learners. These insights also will never be picked up solely by traveling and visiting in a country (which is also very expensive by the way); you need to live there to gain them. Fourthly, you can stay as long as you want (or as short as you want). When you fall in love with a certain culture you can stay for a long time because you have a job and can support yourself. You also can stay for a few years in many different places, being able to support yourself wherever you go. There are many more reasons to take a tefl course, but as we have already seen the benefits are tremendous. Taking this course can forever change your life and offer you opportunities that you never even dreamed of.
