The english language is commonly referred to as a ‘world language'. It is the official language of 54 countries and many international organizations such as the United Nations. According to “english as a global language” by David Crystal: “english is now the language most widely taught as a foreign language- in over 100 countries, such as china, Russia, Germany, spain, egypt and brazil- and in most of these countries it is emerging as the chief foreign language to be encountered in schools, often displacing another language in the process.” There is therefore a high demand for english teachers around the world, and it continues to grow as globalization continues to advance. tefl courses are aimed at helping english teachers, experienced and inexperienced, to have a better grasp of all aspects of teaching. These courses are concerned with not only the teaching of the language in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, but also how to deal with students of different levels. tefl courses give the teacher the confidence needed to engage students of various backgrounds and levels and teach english to them effectively according to their different needs and aims. When I first started teaching english in japan, I had no previous teaching experience and I had never taken a tefl course. There were many things I had to learn by trial and error. Many times, I didn't know how to explain certain grammatical structures and I became flustered and embarrassed because it seemed like I couldn't explain my own language. I realised that just because english is your native language, it doesn't mean that you can teach it. This tesol course helped to improve my teaching skills and it taught me so many things about the english language in terms of teaching it the best way possible. It also gave me the confidence to deal with any situation in teaching english. Planning is essential in having a successful class in that you are prepared for different situations which may occur. Through this course, I have learned how important it is to create a lesson plan in order to ensure that classes go smoothly and cover the areas I want to deal with. It taught me how to structure my lessons based on an ESA teaching plan which helps to engage the students, teach them the necessary information, and help them to practice using what they have learned. In addition, tefl courses give teachers many good ideas and suggestions in making classes interesting and how to make lessons as effective as possible. I believe it is essential for those who are teaching english as a foreign language to take a tefl course. In many situations, a tefl certification is necessary in obtaining teaching jobs. Once a person has a tefl certification, his/her level of competency in the teaching of english is automatically seen as higher than that of someone who does not possess this qualification. tefl courses help people to teach english in the most effective way possible by implementing various techniques and approaches for each student. They help teachers to not only focus on teaching the language, but also to firstly determine the student's level and needs. After this, the teacher is better able to plan classes and execute the lesson successfully. The tefl course has an emphasis on improving pedagogical knowledge and skills, and classroom management. It has the capacity to infuse confidence in the teacher, and should be pursued by any person who is serious about teaching english as a foreign language. It ultimately helps improve the quality of english that is produced by non-native speakers around the world. Having done this course, I can see the clear benefits of taking a tefl course and I am ready to employ the skills and knowledge I have acquired in teaching english the best way possible.
