Since starting the tefl course I have gained an invaluable understanding of the basic technicalities of the language I speak on a daily basis. Before my tefl course, I had very little knowledge of the format of certain sentence constructions or grammar. Because I have been brought up speaking english all my life, everything came naturally and I did not take the time to dive into the basics. Now, I have a greater understanding of certain language and grammar functions. I have also learned to appreciate people for whom english is not a first language. There were many grammar concepts that even I as a native speaker found hard to grasp initially. So, to imagine non-native speakers embark on the journey to learning english makes me appreciate their journey even more as I understand all the challenges that they will face. Lastly, I also learnt to appreciate teachers more as it's not just a job. It's a skill and a passion. I have gained the ability to construct detailed lesson plans for specific groups of students on a variety of topics. I have a greater understanding of how to use resources to complement my teaching. In the future, I hope to take the skills I have learned and utilise them in esl classrooms in different countries. I enjoy travelling and experiencing new cultures and hope that this qualification will open new doors for me.
