Having confidence in the classroom can seem quite a challenge. There are a number of factors that might influence a lack of confidence. Some may be related to teaching, but others may be affected by life experiences. For example, a new teacher may feel overwhelmed with the task of applying what they have learned to a real classroom experience. Other factors such as shyness, fear of speaking in front of a group, and a lack of good planning and organization can make the task even harder. There are a number of things that can be done to help a teacher gain confidence in their ability. One of these is to develop teaching ability. A key in this is good preparation. For example, in teaching english, a teacher needs to know their subject well. Taking language development courses as well as reading books on various aspects of the language can help a teacher feel more confident. You cannot teach something you do not understand yourself, so it is important to understand your subject well to teach with confidence. It is also important to get to know the students well. This is especially important related to culture. If a teacher gets to know the culture of the students they are teaching, this can be used to advantage in the classroom. If the lesson is built around the students' life experiences and scope of knowledge, they are more likely going to respond to the lesson. This, in turn, will give the teacher confidence in their ability. Another aid to gaining confidence is to observe other teachers. As we note their methods, we can see what works and what does not work and then apply that to our own teaching. It is important to show confidence even if a teacher may not feel confident. This can be done by smiling and speaking with enthusiasm about the subject. This will gain the attention of the students and help them to pay attention t o what they are being taught. Dressing professionally is also important. This causes others, especially the students, to recognize that you are serious about your job and gains their respect. It is important to speak with confidence by speaking clearly and maintaining eye contact. It is crucial as well for the teacher to feel they have control of the classroom. This can be done by only giving attention to where it is deserved, not to those who try to taunt or intimidate the teacher. A teacher cannot appear weak to the students or they will gain the control. Once a teacher has lost the respect and control of the students, it is difficult to gain it back. It is important to set goals in teaching so a teacher can track their own progress. As they see themselves progressing, this builds confidence. One way of doing this is to set a specific goal for each class and track progress in this area over a period of time. This can be set by writing the goal in the "Personal aims" section of the lesson plan and then taking notes on how this was accomplished. The job chosen can also be a factor in confidence. A teacher needs to feel they have the support and backing of their employer. If they are thrown into an environment where too much is expected of them and they are not able to meet these expectations, this will affect their confidence. However, if they have resources available to them through their employer including personal support and teaching materials, they can more confidently carry out their job. By applying themselves in all of these areas, teachers can increase their confidence in the classroom and become the kind of teacher who gains the respect of their students and employers and finds their work to be enjoyable and rewarding.
