I have been taking the ITTT tefl course on-line with tutor support since January 2012 and almost done with it. I am actually working on my final unit and I must admit that the whole experience has been amazing. Since I am a non-native english speaker at the beginning I had my doubts if I would be able to follow the course and meet the courses’ objectives. But thanks to my personal tutor Tania and a lot of studying (it has not been easy due to work commitments and a son of 4 years old) I have been able to finish it. The course covers so many different areas from teaching skills to language awareness and I have to say that I particularly enjoyed the grammar units. The Unit 10 with its own CD was particularly challenging but very useful indeed (this will certainly help in my future career). I also believe that most of these teaching skills can be applied outside of a classroom. There are so many aspects of the english language that I didn’t know (even so I lived in england for 13 years) and I am glad that I did this course because it gives you detailed lessons about what to expect in teaching english. I found the course to be very inclusive, and not nearly as “simple” as I thought it might be! I ended up getting far more out of the course than I expected. I actually decided to print out the materials and put them in a folder for future reference. The course offered plenty of practical advice, guides and methods of teaching and an excellent evaluation system of checking my progress through tutor graded worksheets and lesson plans. These allowed me to see my strengths, weaknesses and how my knowledge was developing. I am actually living in a small village in Andalusia, spain and I feel fully prepared to walk into my first class to assist and guide my students (I intend to teach young learners if I can) towards the goals they want. I was actually very happy to find a section in this course on classroom management. The feedback from my personal tutor Tania, the thorough grammar units with ITTT will be invaluable in the preparation of my first class. The course has given me solid foundation to teach english grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. I also feel that this course has helped me understand on how to connect with students, how to cater to their learning styles and how to make my time in the classroom as effective as possible. Overall, I have found the course to be very interesting. Much of the information has been given with regards to teaching strategies. I have found my tutor to be most helpful and I have always been given feedback from her. If ever I felt uncertain I emailed her and she quickly responded and always sent me some suggestions, so that I may better improve myself. All the information I have received and seen is truly insightful.
