“What does it take to be a good teacher?” Being a good teacher does not always mean we have to be too dominating. It also does not mean that we have to please out students and do as they wish. Managing a class is one of the most important aspects of teaching for both experienced and inexperienced teachers. I'd like to share with you some of the useful techniques I have learned from the tefl course and research: maintaining discipline, effective communication with students, and building rapport. The balance between control and friendliness towards students is a crucial part for maintaining discipline. It is always better to be stricter in the beginning and allow room for relaxed controlled. Sometimes, becoming too close to the students will actually have a reverse effect. Students can lack respect for the teacher and treat them as their peers. Depending on the group's age, size, and motivation the teacher will have to discipline accordingly. In order to avoid problems starting before they even begin, teachers should set rules that are fair for students to follow. These rules should be consistent and be kept by the students. If some students are displaying problematic behavior in class, it may be necessary to speak to the student after class. It is best to avoid embarrassing the student publicly. Students will gain better respect and trust for the teacher this way. To have an effective lesson, teachers must try to engage the students into the lesson. At times, it can be quite tough for teachers to keep students focused on what is being taught in class. The voice, eye contact and gestures of the teacher can keep help students focused on the lesson. The range and volume of the teacher's voice will convey very different messages to the students. Also, by having a clear voice, students can better understand the instructions. This can avoid confusion or miscommunication to the students, which will result in less class management problems. In additional, to having a clear voice, teachers can use gestures as they are explaining to students. This helps to provide visuals for instructions. Moreover, eye contact can display a sense of confidence to the students. Students will know when they are asked to speak. Having eye contact ensures that all the students are fully participating. Many problems with discipline can be avoided through eye contact. Another phase of class management is to build good rapport with students. Praise and encouragement at appropriate moments can create harmony in the class. Writing things like encouragement notes from time to time can build the student's confidence. teachers should communicate care to the students in order to build a bond of trust with the students. Students often look up to teachers as their role model, so teachers should set a good example for students to follow. Being reasonable and consistent is a way we can build their trust towards the us. To sum up, we should not underestimate the importance of class management. Managing a class can be just as important as teaching and preparing for our lesson. Becoming the best teacher may not be the easiest thing in the world. But, it is my hope that through my hard work, preparation, dedication, and use of good class management that I can help to build students' confidence in learning the language.
