Role of the
teacher (69) I chose the role of the
teacher because I felt like it was one of the most important topics that should be discussed. The
teacher needs to understand what is expected of them and do their best to meet the needs of the students. There are some
teachers who might have the desire to teach, but do not know how to carry out their roles and responsibilities to themselves and their students. Then there are other
teachers who know their duties and responsibilities but lack the enthusiasm and genuine love for the job. In order to be a successful
teacher, not just an average
teacher, it is important that the
teacher understand his or her roles and know how to execute them successfully in the classroom. Each
teacher is different and is going to have different teaching styles, but this shouldn't change the responsibilities the
teacher has to the students. With time, patience, and hard work,
teachers can learn to be comfortable in their roles meeting the needs of the students and being effective in the classroom. There are countless books and opinions about what the ‘roles' of the
teacher should be, and here I will just mention a few that I feel are important to help meet the needs of the students. First a
teacher needs to be an organizer. In order to be an effective organizer, the
teacher needs to spend the proper amount of time in preparation. Organization of the materials, activities, presentations, handouts, grouping of students, instruction giving etc, is one of the key ingredients to successful teaching. Being organized will help not only boost the confidence level of the
teacher but will also give the students' confidence in their
teacher. In the ‘role' as
assessor, the
teacher is responsible for evaluating and correcting the students in their progression in the
english language. The
assessor role can be sometimes a challenging one because the
teacher must be aware of when and how they should
assess their students. During the study stage the
teacher needs to correct the student (in a non threatening way) on grammar and pronunciation mistakes. However, during the activate stage, the
teacher must allow the students to speak freely without interruption yet continue to monitor students' mistakes and struggles. Some important things for an
assessor to remember are to correct the students during the appropriate stage, to be helpful, fair and consistent, and to be sensitive to the students' needs and feelings. When the
teacher is in complete charge of class activities he or she acts as controller. The
teacher controls what the students do, what they speak and when they speak. Naturally in presenting new material, e.g. a grammatical pattern, new vocabulary, a pronunciation item, etc., the
teacher plays this role. In communicative activities, the
teacher as controller is inappropriate. If the
teacher rigidly controls all language to be used by the students, they can't have the opportunity to learn the language properly. The role as the controller should never be abused or overused. There are many other different roles which the
teacher plays as demonstrated in lesson one of the reading materials, and
teachers are not limited only to the ones mentioned above. The different roles the
teacher plays are going to play a crucial part in the students' ability to learn and understand the
english language well. A
teacher must remember when choosing this profession that they have a responsibility to themselves and to the students to be the best they can be.
