I have learned a number of valuable lessons from this course: ? Teaching english as a foreign language involves a lot of planning and groundwork, as opposed to jumping blindly into lessons, or merely relying on conversational teaching. Students need to be taught in a structured and methodical way so that they can organize what they have learnt in their own minds, and you, as the teacher, can record what they have learnt and constantly monitor their progress. Having learnt this, I intend to plan my english lessons properly (using full lesson plans) and keep an overall schedule to check that I am meeting long-term objectives. I would like to give students a broad overview of what they are going to be learning - so that they can work towards objectives - and make sure that I keep records of everything that I teach. ? ESA lesson plans are very useful. In order to get the most out of one's lessons it is important for the lesson to move through different phases. While this was not so obvious to me before, I am really glad that I have learnt how to structure a lesson so that a) it is not boring or tedious, b) the right amount of english content is covered, and c) english speaking and fluency is encouraged. Going forward, I shall aim to use the ESA plan as a guide for my lessons and always keep in mind the fact that different parts of the lesson should be aiming for different things, and I shall try my best to achieve those. ? english grammar can be confusing if not properly revised. It is easy to get slightly rusty on the nuances of basic english grammar and this course has reminded me of all the grammar rules that are relevant to me at this point. Knowing how easy it is to get muddled or tongue-tied on certain grammar/language points, I shall make sure that I have revised and completely understood the language point I am going to teach, and that I have planned a simple way of explaining it, before I start the lesson. ? english teaching resources are highly useful. This course has reminded me that there are many efl resources available, both in teaching books, and online, and these are fantastic for giving teaching ideas to make lessons dynamic and interesting. In any teaching circumstance that I come across, I will make sure that I make the effort to do some research and find a couple of good reaching resources that I know I can rely on for teaching ideas and worksheets etc.
