The 120 hour tefl course has given us a clear understanding of the specific knowledge, skills and techniques that are necessary to become a successful teacher of english as a second language. The materials delineating the dynamics of the classroom, and the teacher's roles as model, mentor, and a positive, forward-looking instructor have been helpful. Preparations of lesson plans with the Engage-Study-Activate format have been an important part of our learning process, and have enabled us to envision ourselves as teachers of english in a classroom setting . The course work has provided a systematic and solid grounding in the fundamentals of grammar, presented a coherent and meaningful teaching philosophy, and brought to our attention a variety of methods, tools and techniques which should prove most valuable in the classroom. A selection of valued insights that were gained from the course include: 1. Lesson Plans An understanding of the critical importance that Lesson Plans play in: • maximizing the effective use of class time • serving as building blocks for creating an overall structure for courses • establishing a context within which a variety of material can be presented to students • helping to build a collection of creative ideas for application in future classroom activities 2. Teaching Challenges A clearer understanding of the probable challenges that face teachers of TESL. i.e., • the need for flexibility in dealing with a variety of students possessing different learning abilities, past experiences and commitments. • the importance of creating a positive classroom environment. • recognizing the importance of the teacher having a supportive attitude toward the students • an awareness of the various roles the teacher may be called upon to assume: mentor, friend, helper, etc. , which can serve to make the success of their students more likely. • seeing the student as a part of their community, and as an individual • keeping aims and goals clear, within the context of the class work
