Things I wish I'd known before starting the course (78) When I signed up for this course, I was pretty ignorant in terms of what the course would entail. I didn't really review each unit description; I just jumped in feet first looking for a new experience. I think in the back of my mind I thought that because it was an online course, it would be extremely easy to work through quickly and just get my certification. When we received the first units, read through them and spent time with the DVDs, it dawned on me how challenging this course was going to be. The biggest challenge that I encountered was grammar. I wish I had known how little I really knew about english grammar before starting this course! Being a native speaker of english, grammar was something that we learned as young children and then never really paid much attention to again (aside from those pesky red marks we would see on our corrected essays!). I found as an english speaker, and even an english major, it was easy to make your way through the educational system without an entirely firm grasp on grammar. Taking this course truly showed me that I indeed did not have as firm a grasp on grammar as I should have had as a native speaker of the language. Thankfully, this course has given me a great deal of knowledge to add to my existing grammar base. It has also made me much more aware of grammar mistakes I see in my daily reading, or hear others say when speaking. I find myself correcting others and myself more because of this new found knowledge. One other thing I wish I had known before starting this course is how difficult it will be to have to teach something (which is completely natural and by now instinctive for me) to others (which is completely alien and unknown to them) who have had very little if any experience with it. Learning the material in these units, especially the grammar units, was as difficult as it was learning these same things in spanish! It made me realize how difficult it is going to be to try and teach someone something that for me takes no thought to do- it is, as I said, almost an instinctive behaviour for me at this point in my life (I know technically it is a learned behaviour, but bear with me for the sake of comparison!) I now realize that any english speaker cannot and should not just walk into a classroom and teach the language to students; there is a great deal of preparation needed as well as direction and organization in terms of the order you teach students the language in. In conclusion, starting this class as ignorant of its material as I was, made me appreciate how difficult the english language would be to learn, as well as to teach. I underestimated my own skills in grammar, and did not know how difficult it would be to teach something that seems so simple to me, to others. I also underestimated the amount of time that it would take to complete this course, and how much work would be required of me to absorb and complete all 20 units. All in all, while there are some things I wish I had known before the class, not knowing this these created an eye opening experience for me, and made that which I did learn in the course all the more valuable.
