This taught me in two ways, pinpointing areas to improve my english expertise and giving me methods and techniques to form an identity as an efl teacher.
As a native english speaker, I have taken for granted the intuitive feel for the language. I have also been confident in my handle of english and its mechanics. However, there are some difficulties I have overlooked (i.e. passive voice and reported speech). This course gave me areas that I will study further in order to be the most effective efl teacher. In addition, rules and language that I already knew but couldn’t explain, I know have a tangible grasp on (i.e. perfect and perfect continuous tenses).
As an inexperienced teacher, I lacked knowledge of how a lesson should flow, the advantages of games and activities, and classroom management skills. These are the areas that have given me a toolbox to use in my future endeavors as an efl teacher. I plan to use the lessons I’ve learned about lesson planning to give my lessons a wide range and diversity. The management skills I will use to build a rapport between the students and toward the teacher.
In summation, this course reaffirmed and built upon what I knew of the english language, and the course gave me tools to carry english-speaking abilities to students of efl.
