Teaching efl in a Kindergarten #34 Being a kindergarten teacher is not an easy task, but I think that the bright little children make up for the difficult job. It is enjoyable and rewarding to see little children learn from the lessons. Nothing is better than to see the students learning and having fun in the class. Compared to other grades like 1-6th grade, kindergarteners may be the most difficult to handle for many reasons. They are considerably young, and it will be their first time in an unusual environment without a family member around them. Not only are they alone, but they are also going to be introduced to a foreign language. It is important to ensure that all students are comfortable and feel safe in the class, before moving onto any of the lessons. teachers need to make sure to have patience with these little children because they do not know much about behavior and skills. For this reason, it is important to create activities that are appropriate for their age group. For example, they would not be able to do many arts and craft because they are not good at using certain tools like scissors. However, it would be great to do several games and drawing activities with the students. A great activity that I learned while doing a volunteer work at an Elementary school was to lay down different colors of crayons on the table. I would ask each student to pick up a certain color (ex. Pink) and draw any picture. This is a great way to teach colors to the kindergarteners. Another great activity that I saw was to have finger paint and have them learn the colors as they paint. Since this is the first time the children are entering the school, it is important to teach them the correct behavior and attitude as a young age. Adolescents are able to learn faster than adults, so this is the best age to start teaching them the english language and other important skills. Although teachers may have a hard time controlling the students, it is important to have patience, be happy and care for each and every student. teachers need to be the best role model for these young children. Lastly, I think that it is best to have the classroom colorful, decorated, and filled with labels and pictures. No student wants to enter a plain/boring classroom. I believe that when a class is filled with bright colors and decorations, it fills the mind with imaginations. Also, since it is hard to hold a child's attention for a long time, it is good to make each lesson short. Not only should the lessons be short and interesting, but there should be lots of different activities for the students to do. Singing simple songs, drawing and painting, doing arts and crafts, or even doing outdoor activities, are great for growing children. It is best to have different type of activities for the students each day, so that they are always looking forward to a new lesson.Citation: http://www.teflcorp.com/articles/68-tefl-teaching-efl-in-a-kindergarten/214-teaching-efl-in-a-kindergarten.htm
