I was surprised at how much I learned during this course. I have been teaching esl for a total of 3 years and took this course just to become certified as an esl teacher. With three years of experience, I thought there would be very little new information. However, I found that by taking this course I have been able to learn a few new things and also hone my teaching. First of all, I had never heard of the ESA design for teaching before taking this course. I have applied this strategy to my classes and have noticed that the students respond much better to this way of teaching. There is less down time, and the students seem to be paying attention for longer periods of time. I make sure to have multiple activities during class, so the students won't become bored by doing one for too long. Next, I have learned many more activities for teaching various language points. By completing the worksheets, I had to come up with multiple ideas to teach certain grammar points. They made me think about how the language would be used in real life. This allowed me to create activities that would reflect the use in real situations. I actually was able to use my Pictionary game for teaching 'going to' future tense. The students really liked the game. I'll use other activities in the same way to provide a fun activate stage at the end of class. Also, I have lesson plans already created for teaching certain grammar points and language. Although I have course books for my classes, I will look at my lesson plans to see if I can use parts of it to help teach specific language elements. In addition to the ideas and plans, I also learned about different ways to manage the classroom. I had never thought of changing desk arrangements as a way to diffuse problem behavior in the classroom. It actually works, and I have used this multiple times in my classes. By moving the desks around, the students can be separated from each other, so they are not able to bother one another. Even though I had a good understanding of the english language and grammar, reviewing items in the units allowed me to strengthen my understanding and ability to teach them by providing additional examples and further explanations. When teaching new grammar, it is always beneficial to have multiple ways of teaching it. Not every student will understand if you only teach using the book examples. Sometimes, it requires drawings and additional easier examples to help them understand. Especially when teaching the past tense, diagrams and timelines will help explain the differences between the past perfect and the simple perfect. I also gained knowledge about how to teach different types of groups. Most of my experience has been teaching young learners from South Korea. Thus, most of my knowledge on how to teach had to do with teaching that specific group. This course showed me the differences of young learners and adult learners. It pointed out the different mind sets of the two. Because the motivations are usually different, the teaching style may have to be changed. young learners are usually learning because their parents are making them. Thus, it is the teacher's responsibility to provide motivation to the students. However, adult learners will usually be learning for a job or school position. Thus, they will have their own motivations for learning english. Also, the course pointed out different ways to teach for individual students. Many activities require more than just one student to accomplish. The course provided many activities suitable for teaching individuals, such as talking about photographs and reading current events. Many times an individual student will finish work much faster than a group of students, so there is free time. It is necessary to have additional material other than the course book. With individual students, the course can become more specific to what the student wants to learn. I learned about a needs analysis which can be used at the beginning of a course to help identify what the class wants to get out of the course. This allows the teacher to cater the lessons to the students. I will use a needs analysis questionnaire to find out the goals of the students and what they need in a class. Then, I will be able to alter the lessons to better suit the class. Finally, the most important thing that I gained from this course is confidence in my teaching ability. I had confidence in my teaching ability before, but this course has allowed me to perfect my teaching style.
