I was asked the question “Why are you doing a tefl course?” by a number of my friends and family. They asked the question with a frown upon their face. They couldn't quite grasp why I was doing it. After all, I had been residing in Korea for over 4 years, teaching english. “You don't need to study, you're already a teacher! What a waste of money”, came from one of my fellow teacher friends. I'd like to answer this question from a personal point of view, calling on my experiences and studies through this course, in hope that it may inspire another teacher, or two, to do the same. The answer to the question, ‘Why complete a tefl course?', can be found in the question ‘What makes a great teacher?'. The ultimate goal for any existing teacher, or wannabe teacher, is to become a better teacher, a stronger teacher, in order to meet the demands of the learner. I felt, that I wanted to improve as a teacher. I felt I had areas, in my teaching, that needed improvement and strengthening, and I was convinced I still had a lot to learn myself. The more experience I gained, as an efl teacher, the more I realised how important my role was. At the same time, I began to realise how much I actually, didn't know about my subject. It left me in a vulnerable state of mind, and asking myself “What am I doing here?” and holding my hand up, and admitting “I'm not giving my students the best possible chance to learn.” I knew that a tefl course was the answer. I set on improving my teaching ability and knowledge of my subject, which I think are two of the reasons why one should consider a tefl course. On the first hand, if one is embarking on a career in teaching english, then it's the responsibility of that person, to make sure they're thoroughly equipped in order to make it a success. They need to know the varying dynamics that are involved in teaching. Not just knowledge of the subject itself, but also, and possibly even more importantly, is knowing, understanding, appreciating, respecting and being very well prepared for, the learner. The quality of learning that the student receives is largely down to the quality that the teacher can provide. For a teacher to sell themselves short of the knowledge and know-how, that a tefl course can provide, is to be of a disservice to the learner. A tefl course illustrates the theories, the methodologies and the practices behind the teaching of the english language. It indentifies problems and gives solutions. It guides the teacher in managing classes, working with tenses, pronunciation, phonology, evaluation, testing, to name just a few. It basically gives a teacher a solid foundation of knowledge, and with that, the necessary skills in order to deliver that knowledge effectively and with the learner, constantly, in mind. To end, I'll finish with an analogy. A football player, in order to not disappoint him/herself and the fans, would never step onto the soccer pitch without having put in the hard work and time on the training pitch, Teaching is the same. The soccer pitch acts the classroom, the training pitch is the tefl course and the fans are the learners. “Why complete a tefl course?” they ask. “It's my responsibility to my students.” I say.
