I have gained an understanding of english grammar that I never had before. This was something I was hoping to learn in a tesol course because, as a native speaker, I otherwise would never think of the english language in this way- in terms of grammar rules, parts of speech, etc. My studies and past employment always revolved around writing but, since I hadn't studies the language technically since elementary school, I had not concept of it. That course has made me much more comfortable with the idea of explaining the english language based on rules rather than on instinct. This is obviously crucial when teaching students. In the classroom, this knowledge will help me better understand the students' relationships with the language and why they make certain mistakes. I think I am now much better equipped to answer students' questions.
