In an ideal world, every man and woman would speak the same language and live in peaceful unison. There would be no violence, and each and every person would respect one another. Many wars would be overlooked, countless disagreements eliminated, and racism would be a meaningless word. Does this image resemble anything which you have come to know? Consequently, this representation of the earth would only be realistic distinctive groups were able to communicate their views, cultures and opinions in a concise way. Language is the only unique way for a specific group of people to verbally communicate in a way that many can never understand. Undoubtedly, language is a defining cultural attribute of the self that is valued highly by many, and the majority of people take pride in speaking a language that they can call their own. It is, however, quite essential in this day and age to find a way to break down some of our mental group associations and view the people of the world as an entire group entity. According to the Webster's Dictionary, a broad definition of language is “any means of conveying or communicating ideas.” How we communicate these ideas in a variety of ways is important, but the definition leaves room for a wide spectrum of interpretations. Language can be communicated through ones voice, body, emotions, or written word; for example, various cultures “speak with their hands,” or even intonate differently, which can give a completely new meaning to a string of words. This provides a certain degree of understanding between cultures with language barriers. It is, however, undoubtedly true that non-verbal communication cannot fully replace an articulated verbal conversation. It has become very attractive, therefore, for members of all cultures, races, and languages to define one global language in which to learn for communication in any country. Since members of specific groups can only communicate with each other, this global language can bridge many gaps between these groups. Although this idea is not accepted by some, the majority of the world has developed an overwhelming interest in learning english. It is undeniable that everyday life is completely turned upside down in the presence of a language barrier. Even the most confident individuals can feel completely vulnerable and out of control. Visiting a foreign country can be quite daunting to anyone from any culture. The discomfort can be eased, though, if people from the two countries can both communicate in english. Since it is impossible for individuals to learn each and every language, the english language serves as a middle ground. Designating english as the global language also opens up many international business and trade opportunities for otherwise segregated organizations. Companies can more comfortably expand their businesses to adequately take advantage of their respective markets. Since there are so many resources unique to specific areas around the globe, organizations are able to conduct business in these areas, while in turn saving money and efficiently using precious resources. Upon living in Korea for almost two years now, the language barrier is still a significant hurdle to overcome as an expatriate. I am quite grateful, nonetheless, to be in a position to teach children and adult students to speak the world's global language. It is a skill that many people aspire to gain, as it greatly increases an individual's chances for success in their career and traveling life. The world is a place where all cultures and races must learn to appreciate one another, but this can only truly begin, and be achieved, when we have fully overcome the language communication barrier.
