The Role of the teacher What makes a good teacher? This question can be answered a million different ways, but the focus of this article will focus on the role of the teacher. The reason I chose this subject is for the fact that it can cover the majority of the topics that we were given to choose from. Plus, I will talk about past experiences and what my role will be as I go forward. Someone isn't a great teacher from the start, just like anything it takes time and experience. You need to observe and continue to hone your skills to get better. The basic fundamental role of the teacher is to be an educator. They need to teach the students! There isn't one perfect way that this is done because everyone has their own style. teachers need to find what works best for them. As you will see from reading some of what I will write about will be of past experience especially related to the military. teachers take on many roles especially depending on where you teach and the level of students that you teach. If you teach younger students you are a teacher and a babysitter. The older the students the more you become a teacher/friend relationship. The most important skill I feel a teacher has to have is confidence. Without that everything else will be so much more difficult because you will not have the trust and confidence of the students. So, I would say that the teacher has to be a leader. In the military you have a rank structure to let everyone know who is in charge. Being a teacher is the same. The teacher is in charge, but to be in charge they have to have confidence. In my past experience I have seen some good teachers, bad teachers, good professors, bad professors, good cadre, bad cadre, good leaders and bad leaders. All had different qualities and styles, but the more respected ones always had confidence in themselves and it reflected on how they taught or led. One thing though, they never thought they were perfect. If they didn't know something they didn't teach it the wrong way. They admitted that they didn't know, but would find the answer for them. Being confident is just the start. A great leader or teacher has to have more than just confidence. They have to be competent. People have to have a reason to follow, listen, or learn from a teacher or leader. This is where the knowledge of the subject, lesson or activity comes into play. Having superior knowledge or a good grasp of what you are teaching helps make you more credible. This helps to build trust and rapport with the students. When you get this type of class dynamics it is easier to create a quality learning environment. We now see the role of the teacher to be a motivator because the teacher has created a credible trusted learning environment for the students. Since the students are motivated to learn, now you have to be creative and a manager. This part is important because you want to keep the classes fun. At the same time you want to keep the classes flowing smoothly so students don't get bored or lost. The Role of the teacher is now more of a manager because you have to make sure that you are always ready for class with a specific plan (that needs to have flexibility), all teaching aids, awareness of time, and most of all awareness of if the students are comprehending what is being taught. You don't want to have the deer in the headlights look. This is really no different than when I was a football coach. We had a game plan going in, but you had to make changes to have a successful outcome. teachers also have to take the role of evaluators. They need to be honest, but positive about the progress of the students. They don't want to bring the student down or make them seem dumb. Learning anything new is a challenge, but another language is hard for everyone. You don't want to do anything to discourage learning. Being an evaluator goes hand in hand with being a motivator, yes you have to make the student to understand the corrections that need to be made, but they have to make it a positive experience. Don't focus entirely on the failures! Another role of the teacher is the disciplinarian. This is also an important role because you want to control your class. Being able to do this will reduce the amount of interruptions and altercations. You want a controlled class where you can have optimal learning with minimal distractions because the goal is to learn. Basic rules are treat everyone like you would like to be treated. You also want everyone to feel safe and open to participate. These roles will help to be a good teacher, but really you never stop learning so the goal of the teacher should be to continue to strive to be better. Like everything else in life you should want to be just ok or good. You should strive to get better. Don't do things to standard, but strive for scoring higher than standard. I could get more examples, get quotes from books and experts, but all you have to do is draw from your own past. What have you felt were the best teacher and why? As I go forward I want to improve in all aspects of english. I will take what I learned here and what I have experienced in the past to combine them to tutor students. I will be focusing on older students and adults. The reason for my focus is I will be starting a tutoring business for all levels, but I wanted to get a general knowledge on what to look for in teachers as I move forward. I also, have several businesses that rotate around being able to speak english so the knowledge that I gained from this course will help immensely.
