When I was an elementary and high school student, it was customary to learn about grammar and the structure of the language, but I had apparently forgotten much of it. I relearned it during this course. I also gained an appreciation for how complex our language is. My spoken grammar is close to perfect, but if someone asks me why I worded something a certain way, I usually just say, “ because it sounds right.” Now, I might actually be able to explain it.
Having taught in an international school for the past eleven years, I realize now that I have gained a lot of on-the-job training for teaching esl. Very few of my students are native english speakers, and their levels vary from true beginners to fluent speakers. I am grateful to have the services of esl teachers who offer support both in and out of my classrooms. I have learned a lot about addressing the needs of young learners that I can apply right now.
The reason I took this course in the beginning was to have “certified esl” on my CV. I am considering going back to the US, and I want to make myself more marketable. I am told that this is at top of the wish-list for many school districts.
