Classroom management is absolutely essential for effectively teaching students. The need for management can vary greatly depending on the age and level of learning of the students. For Native english teachers (NET) the additional variable of the students comprehension with what is being said also creates some problematic behavior, particularly with younger students whose attention span is limited. In order for a NET to maintain order and effectively teach, there are several rules a teacher should follow. The first important rule is to always be prepared and maybe even over prepared. Preparation begins with lesson planning. Lesson plans serve as a guideline for the NET to follow and contain what will be taught and for how long. Lesson plans can be completed daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly but is probably a good idea to give some time for variation as some subjects/material may need more time for learning and additional lessons may need developed. Many kindergartens follow a theme and then incorporate phonics, letters, and numbers into the theme. Having a lesson plan will allow the teacher to plan what will be taught, for how long, and in what way. For the younger children, it is important to make it fun. Often times, the children won't even realize that they are learning. Also, it is important to add extra activities at the end of the lesson plan incase all of the material is covered quickly. Younger children have short attention spans, if the lesson activities run out or if too much time is being taken to prepare materials, the students may get bored and begin to discover less desirable activities to entertain themselves. Once the lesson planning is complete, the NET will have a better idea of what materials will be needed for the lesson and can eliminate the transition time between activities. When including craft making in the lesson plan, it is important for the NET to make the craft beforehand to become familiar with how long it will take to complete, identify things that may take extra time and either eliminate or make more simple. Also, by making the craft ahead of time, it gives the student an idea of what they are expected to make (of course they may add their own personality to it as well). If the NET develops lesson plans and prepares ahead of time, the transition time between tasks will be reduced and ultimately give the young students less time to let their minds drift into mischievous behavior. Even the most prepared teacher can still have some challenging students. It is important for the NET to have effective discipline in the classroom in order to maintain attention and respect of all the students. Younger children seem to be more prone to testing the boundaries of the NET. If this testing should arise, the teacher should identify and eliminate the undesired behavior. While the behavior should be addressed, it is important to do it in a way that doesn't scare the student but does get the point across that the behavior is unacceptable. The obvious “no-no's” for discipline include yelling and hitting and are not necessary. Effective discipline can be as simple as using positive reinforcement. This takes place when the teacher ignores the undesirable behavior and praises the good behavior. For example, if a lot of students are talking and one student is sitting quietly, the teacher can make it obvious to the class that this child is being rewarded for such good behavior by giving the quiet student a sticker. Furthermore, a study by Henderlong and Lepper (2002) concluded that the use of positive reinforcement can increase a child's motivation to learn. Every teacher has their own way of using discipline but there are some good ideas to keep in mind. Some of these ideas include using positive reinforcement, setting up a reward chart for good behavior, and eliminating the undesired behavior before it starts by setting up rules. While lesson planning and effective discipline are vital for classroom management, the NET has the additional barrier of communication in general. Most of the younger children can have little to no english comprehension before attending Kindergarten. Therefore, communication should not be limited to speaking and take other forms while the children are learning. Other forms include the use of pictures, visual cues and gestures or mimes. When the NET verbally communicates, it is important to use simple language and avoid using slang, jargon or unnecessary words that may cause confusion. Classroom management can be quite tricky at times and even the most skilled and seasoned NET can have challenges. By preparing ahead of time, having effective discipline, and using the proper communication, the NET should be able to deliver an effective and fun learning experience for the young learner.
