Some scientists argue that children must master their mother tongue properly before they start learning english as a foreign language . Others are of the opinion that babies and very young children who are raised with two languages can learn them both in the time it takes most monolingual babies to learn one . Patricia Kuhl, a co-director of the Institute for Brain and Learning Sciences at the University of Washington, who has done extensive research on the subject, says that "We're seeing the brain as more plastic and ready to create new circuits before than after puberty ". Learning the language after that will be more difficult and only very few people will learn to speak english without an accent. Non-english parents, who recognize the advantages of their pre-school children getting exposed to english as a foreign language, may have an option to send their children to an english speaking Kindergarten. The Kindergarten is an ideal location for children to learn english. Here they get naturally exposed to the language through songs, books and the wide variety of games and creative activities that are offered to them. This might however not be enough “to stretch the children to their optimum potential” . As in any efl teaching program, it is important to develop the children's listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. There are many playful ways to do so. Inspiration can be found on the internet and in good reference books. A captivating story can serve as the starting point to develop the children's listening and speaking skills. The theme of the story can for example be discussed in the group. The children should be invited to interact with the group by taking it in turn to share their thoughts and experiences. When one child practices to speak, the others learn to listen attentively to be able to respond to what they hear. children should be encouraged to speak with the teachers and their friends throughout the day to reinforce what they have previously learnt. children's reading and writing can also be introduced in the Kindergarten. At a very young age, children read the pictures in the books. They may also be ready to learn the sounds of the language, before they start learning the alphabet. An interesting method to teach the children the 42 letter sounds of the english language is Jolly Phonics. When the children learn a new sound, they will learn to associate the sound with an action. This helps them remember the sound. The Montessori school also teaches the sounds and letters through a multi-sensory approach. Here the children hear the sound, see the form of a letter, and feel the way it is written by tracing their fingers over individual sandpaper letters. As an english teacher in a Kindergarten it is worth getting familiar with several methods such as Jolly Phonics and Montessori and to use them as a source of inspiration. If the teaching is fun and the children feel engaged and interested to learn, they will leave the Kindergarten with many invaluable gifts - the ability to communicate with confidence in a new language, an interest to continue learning in school and hopefully a bright future.
