I would like to say that the tefl course is the best organized, insightful, adaptable and creative english teaching course that I have ever experienced; therefore I will try to briefly summarize why anybody should complete a tefl course. Firstly it gives a very varied and important role the teacher has in effectively teaching the english language to students whose second language is english. It also highlights the common problems and obstacles that students have in learning english as a new language. The course begins by reviewing grammar and parts of speech which is critical as most english speaking people have often forgotten much of this and need to grasp a clear understanding of their first language before being able to effectively teach english to others. I cannot emphasize this enough as although I am highly educated as a professional engineer and a project manager with over 25 years experience in project management, I have learned that the TESL course explains the english verb tenses in a format unequalled by any school system that I've seen. It logically and systematically teaches the english verb tenses with forms that can be understood by a child. Brilliant! Secondly the TESL course uses a methodology in teaching called ESA which stands for Engage, Study, and Activate which motivates the students to want to learn english. In the Engage phase the teacher arouses the students interest and involvement. In the Study phase the teacher uses activities for the students to learn the language and how it is constructed. In the Activate phase the students are encouraged to use the language that they know. It provides variations of this ESA system for all ages and levels of students in order to make them motivated, interested, and have fun in learning english. TESL lessons allow for flexibility and provide a balance between study and activation exercises. Thirdly, TESL allows the teacher to use a variety of visual aids such as pictures, photos, videos, actual objects, etc to keep the students' attention and also motivates students to use their imaginations while learning the language. Various activate activities such as role-plays, games, discussions, debates, handout sheets and story writing make even the fun parts of the lesson a very good learning experience. Students are not just using their listening and writing skills but also their speaking and reading skills in every lesson. Fourthly, TESL teaches the teacher how to evaluate students language abilities and also teach them how to prepare their lessons to meet the needs and expectations of the students. For example in preparing the lesson the teacher is taught to consider the context, focus, objectives, anticipated problems and solutions for each class.
