Although I have some prior teaching experience and have taken shorter tefl courses in the past, I still found the material in this course useful and relevant. I particularly found the grammar units helpful. Native speakers often take grammar for granted: they have a vague understanding of what sounds and looks right, but would be at a loss to explain why. The units were not completely comprehensive – difficult to achieve in such a course – but still they offered a solid introduction into the various parts of speech. I feel I am more confident now in explaining various grammar points than I was prior to taking this course. As well, each grammar unit provided invaluable advice pertaining to potential fun and engaging grammar activities. I will definitely use these in the future as they add spice and variety to otherwise dull grammar lessons. The course has also forced me to think more about what makes a quality teacher. I think I’ve learned how to be a more flexible, interactive, motivational and inclusive teacher. I think I am now better suited and equipped to handle any difficulty that will inevitability arise in the classroom. I feel I now possess more qualities that make a successful teacher: a good organizer, a patient assessor, an empathetic prompter and a skilled facilitator. Of course, these skills and qualities will be further refined with more practice and time within the classroom. Another element of the course that has really helped me is the focus on student-talking-time. Although I had known about the value of speaking activities and had incorporated such activities into my lessons, looking back, I feel that I didn’t give students enough time to work with the language. I think I rushed them through activities, instead of letting them experiment with the language. The course has really highlighted the importance of being a patient prompter: giving students the time and confidence needed to speak is fundamental to language retention. When I teach again, I aim to have the patience and wherewithal to prioritize student-speaking-time in the classroom. And finally, I found the review of TELF methodology incredibly useful. Again, I was familiar with the “ESA” framework prior to the course. However, this time around I found the ideas taught in the “study” portion to be new and refreshing. I had always approached the “study” section as the inevitable “boring” part of the lesson; the dull grammar portion sandwiched between the more interesting segments. Through this course, I’ve realized that the “study” portion need not be monotonous or soporific. The course has provided me with helpful advice about how to make the “study” section livelier, including the many games introduced in Unit 3. I know find I have the requisite tools to craft a total lesson plan: one that is engaging from beginning to end. Overall, I found this course to be more than simply a refresher of esl methodology: it has breathed new life into my teaching prowess. It has provided me with fresher ideas and a new confidence.
