Online tefl course vs onsite tefl course (7) Originally when I decided on taking a tefl course, I was looking at an onsite program in prague that I would have done over the summer. This plan then changed to going to the ITTT program in tokyo, but I eventually made the decision not to do so. For a long time I have always thought that it was necessary for me to physically be in a classroom in order to learn, however, I found that by taking the online course, not only did it give me more time to learn the material and understand my mistakes (even though I did ultimately end up putting the course off until the last minute) at my own pace, rather than with a larger group of students who might have understood things faster. However, there is always something to be missed while doing anything on the Internet. In the case of tefl, what had originally appealed to me was the hands-on experience I could have potentially gotten in the classroom setting. I could have met various people from around the world, and could have learned to establish myself as a teacher with training experience. After looking at tefl reviews online, this seems to be everyone's biggest regret when it comes to taking the online course. Another problem this might present is that the onsite classroom offers a solution to is not having enough experience to get a job once the course is over. I am fairly certain an employer would prefer someone with classroom experience and since that is something I currently lack. However, the convenience of the online tesol course ended up being the deciding factor, not only for me, but also for many people. For example, my co-worker did an online tesol certificate and has been working as an english ALT in japan for around five years. She wants to get the ‘young learners certificate' in addition to her tesol, and when we recently spoke about it, she said that the online class was convenient for her because it was short and she could do it when she had time to spare and would not have to sit in a classroom since she was already doing that every day as a teacher. Since many tefl courses are around four weeks, and seem to usually be far from home. Not everyone can take a whole month out of their life to dedicate to a class, so this makes the online course very appealing. It is also much cheaper, making the online course both cost and time effective, which I think tends to be a deciding factor for anyone nowadays. Ultimately, both courses have their good and bad points. I think the online course was better for me, not only because of the time and the price, but also because it ended up suiting my schedule and my personality better. I felt more like I could write more about how I felt on certain subjects where as in a classroom I might have been too scared to give some of my opinions. In terms of the job hunting problem, I got lucky this year and I have had the opportunity to teach at the english café I currently work at, so while it might not be real classroom training, it is still giving me an advantage as I get experience and I get to work with english learners of all ages.http://www.eltworld.net/times/2011/03/an-online-or-onsite-tesol-course-which-is-best/ http://www.runawayjane.com/online-tefl-course-vs-in-the-classroom/ http://www.cactustefl.com/get_started/online_vs_face_to_face_tefl.php
