In order to fully understand a foreign learner, one must understand their reason for seeking out the education they need for success. No matter if the person is a young learner or an adult, they all learn at a different pace. They also learn according to the teaching style of the teacher. The teacher teaches while using the lesson material but also through their personality while teaching the particular group. This focus is to identify why the young learners are different from the adult learners. There are many factors why the young learner is like a human sponge. First, they are willing to learn anything new the teacher gives them. They especially need plenty of visual aids. For instance, these visual aids can be photos, videos, written words, music, or something as simple as body language from the teacher. Second, they tend to become easily distracted from their studies. They have short attention spans and they become bored with the topic they are learning. For example, the young learners would rather do something fun and entertaining, like coloring or playing video games. Third, the young learner has lots of energy. Be sure to play plenty of games with them. For instance, the games can be as simple as partner role playing, or as detailed as playing group ‘Jeopardy'. Fourth, they need constant attention from the teacher. Without the teacher motivating them, they will search out trouble. Disciplining the children is a must, on a daily basis, by the teacher. Fifth, young learners tend to focus on what they enjoy and not on what is going on in the world. They are focused on the ‘me' factor. Which means, young learners want only what is important to them. On the other hand, adult learners tend to focus on what is right for their future. The adults are more motivated for learning because they have the background knowledge of the real world. They have the patience, dedication, and focus. Several factors play into this scenario. If learning english is work related, they must attend with a happy disposition even though they may be tired from work and home responsibilities. They want that raise! When someone is attending english classes for a college education or a better life in America, they usually need to pay for the class themselves. Also, when an adult learner of english wishes to travel to countries where it is predominately the english Language, they want to learn for the best experience they can have on their travels. On a good note, for the teacher, adult learners have no discipline issues, they can work alone with ease, and they can keep focused for longer time periods. They are generally well-read and well-traveled, which makes them great conversationalists. The only negative issues with teaching adult learners is that adult learners will have a more difficult time wanting to play games or group participation projects because they are embarrassed. They are afraid of being judged. Either way, they are eager to learn. In conclusion, young learners and adults differ in teaching styles. But, all people, at any age, should have acceptance in the learning mode. We all seek patience, compassion, and admiration from our peers and teacher. The important role of the teacher, assists in guiding the student, at any age, achieve their best. Even thought adult learners have many differences to learning from young learners, they all want to succeed.
