When I undertook this course, I had already been teaching in a non-
english speaking country for one and a half years. I believe that this experience gave me a good platform to work through all of the units. The course gave me many good teaching ideas and provided me with a confidence that what I was teaching at my schools was solid and that I was on the right track. In particular, I believe that the most worthwhile thing that I gained from the course were the grammar units. They gave me the knowledge to be able to explain in a logical way, why and how the
english language is formed.
Also, the incessant attention on lesson planning has been very useful. In my current position, I don't ever plan lessons in such detail, as the schools have the curriculum all mapped out. I just have to introduce the topic/vocabulary and provide activities and games. It has allowed me to think of the process a lot more clearly and prescriptively and to prepare me for the very real possibility that I will have to plan all my lessons in my new job.
My current position in
japan is coming to an end at the end of the month, but certainly, I have already used the things that I have learned about in the units, in the classroom, over the last 5 months, as mentioned above. My next job takes me to Honduras, where I will be working as a volunteer for the next two years, working for a charity organisation which has an
english speaking
business college on a remote mountain peak. The students are all impoverished young women that board at the campus. My job will be to run an eco-tourism
business so that the girls can see first hand how to run a
business and how to generate income. I will be also teaching them
english as I am explaining
business concepts and models with them.
I believe that
ITTT has given me a good basic foundation to be able to do this as efficiently and as effectively as possible.
