With countries such as the united states, canada, australia, and england leading the world in economic and political developments, their native tongue of english has widespread global use. This adoption of english as a second language often is a result of businesses world-wide adapting to the need to be able to serve their english speaking clients effectively and therefore learn the language. Other countries find themselves using english as their second language, such as Ethiopia or Zambia, by default. Countries such as these have so many different traditional languages and dialects that in order to interact with their neighbors in their constant interactions as the world develops they have chosen english as their language of central communication. In the developing world, to be able to communicate with the english language allows for many more social and economic opportunities, leading to more education and therefore more development. Others find themselves relocated to english speaking countries as a result of persecution in their own country. These refugees are forced to learn english in order to fit into their new home. As more and more people adopt the language, whether by need or want, english, without a doubt, is becoming a universal language. As technology and transportation means make the world ‘smaller', the Global Village that is our world is experience rapid changes in culture and worldview, not the least of which is this language phenomenon. It is interesting to realize, that this language phenomenon is nothing new. Language adoption has been a part of our history for thousands of years. When a more powerful country dominates another such as ancient greece's conquering of the Greco-Roman empire or the more recent European colonialism of Africa, the submissive culture is forced to adopt the mother tongue. Communication is a necessary aspect of culture and life. In today's world, communication has become faster and easier. As the english language dominates as a result of english countries dominating in world economics, more and more people are adopting the language. Will the world someday speak only one language? Are there risks of this? Some say that risks could include cultivating an elite monolingual class. Simply as a result of fluency in the central tongue, some people will be in a higher class because they are able to function within society faster and with greater depth of comprehension while others are left struggling at the bottom of the language chain in menial work. Maybe with a central universal language people will become too lazy to learn other languages. Will all minority languages be lost? If all we need is one language to communicate with each other that truly is a possibility. We must ask whether or not this is a good thing. Significant culture is lost as languages die, yet significant global development is gained as we are able to communicate on a universal level. However, what are the possible benefits of having a universally known language? Could the world be united as we are able to communicate with one voice? Many misunderstandings would certainly be avoided if this were the case. Is it enough to bring peace? The many possibilities, both good and bad, of what a Global Language could mean for our world are endless. However, for today we must recognize that there are many people in the world who are in need of learning the language in order to function at a higher level in the society they live. Teaching and learning esl is a huge need which we must work together to meet in order to improve the quality of life for many people.
