My experience with the ITTT tefl course has been my first exposure to the world of teaching. Up until recent months, I had little interest in teaching and a vague fear of whatever lesson planning entailed. On the whole, it had seemed to me a frightening job with tedious tasks of preparation. I have found, however, that this course has both enlightened me as to the function of a teacher and shown me I may be capable of executing the role well and, to my surprise, that I will likely enjoy it. The methodical way in which the course covered grammar and the various verb tenses provided a structured framework for my future tefl position as well as a good base knowledge if I choose to study further in tefl. The few english courses I have taken in both high school and college covered similar topics, but not to the depth or with the details of this program. I found it valuable to remind myself of the basics of my own native language and therefore equip myself to share the knowledge with others. I had thought teachers would be a certain personality type--people who love the spotlight or find themselves the center of attention; ever-ready with jokes or amusing stories. I now see that there most definitely is some value in constructive entertainment within the classroom, but ultimately, the teacher needs to impart knowledge of the english language as well as foster an environment of engaging study and a desire to learn. As a lover of foreign languages, I can relate to my students on that level and build rapport as they continue to increase their own capabilities in a foreign tongue. This course showed me that the entire weight of learning does not fall on the teacher’s shoulders: there is the responsibility of engaging the students, but the students themselves must decide to actively work and participate in the class. While challenges may arise in designing activities and lessons perfectly suited to the class, I have found myself relieved of the pressure of being a flawless teacher. I can and shall do my best in the classroom, while being personable and organized, but I, like the rest of the class, am human and prone to err. The best way to ensure my success in the classroom lies in lesson planning. This formerly dreaded task no longer unnerves me. I see the usefulness in creating an interesting and informative lesson. The tasks with grammar and vocabulary I completed in the course came to life in lesson planning. I now see the need to be well-grounded in the details of language in order to develop an engaging and beneficial lesson for the class. And in order to be relaxed and confident, the minutia of time limits and structured ESA stages will be a great help. I had not thought a lesson plan would include a pattern for teaching nor estimated amounts of time per stage, but I now see the great usefulness of such a method. After having equipped myself with the knowledge of how and what to teach through this tefl course, all that remains is to enjoy the job!
