I learned a lot from this tefl course. I was pleased that it contained a great deal of practical knowledge, readily useful in the classroom. The areas for which I am specifically most grateful are the introduction to grammar, the specifics of teaching esl learners, the recommendations for teaching young leaners (whom I have never taught), and the information about teaching business english. As an english Literature (and psychology) undergraduate I had freshman composition courses waived and I am ashamed to say that I learned no grammar. Like many native speakers, I used correct grammar but couldn't explain why I chose the language I chose. I appreciated good writing and speaking, but did not know how to teach someone to speak or write well. I was (and still am) in desperate need of more grammar knowledge. The course introduced me to grammar and instilled in me the desire to know more, so that I can teach it to others. As a Counselor in college/university I taught some courses but I knew that my teaching skills would not easily transfer to esl learners unless I obtained more specific knowledge. This course went a long way to teaching me things I need to know, from describing esl learners I can expect to teach to imparting knowledge about how to engage these learners in the learning process, plus information on encountering problems and providing solutions. I especially appreciated the specific suggestions for activities that were included throughout the course. I could never picture myself teaching young learners; it was never something I aspired to do. I found the lessons about doing so very interesting, but from a purely theoretical point of view. I still do not think I would be any good at it, but I feel that I have more tools in my repertoire should it ever be required of me. Lastly, I appreciate what the course taught me about teaching business english. I suspect that this is the area of esl in which I would like to work. I like working with adults and enhancing their work skills. My future plans are to take the business english course through ITTT, which I hope to complete by November, and to take a grammar course online. By December I plan to be looking for a job abroad, preferably in Oman, teaching english to adults.
