This course has caused me to revise my knowledge of english language and has thus made me far more aware of the subject matter that I will be teaching. The references to further books on the subject were very helpful. I am now confident in my understanding of the english language. This, of course, will make me a far more effective teacher as a better understanding of the work gives the teacher more confidence, and allows the teacher to devise effective activities and explanations for the class. This course has also made me far more aware of how the mind of a learner works. It has drawn attention to classroom dynamics, the interplay between family background and classroom performance, and the very important impact that the enthusiasm of the teacher can have on the overall success of the class. Unit 10 was very effective in demonstrative effective teaching techniques vs. ineffective techniques. In effect, this course has taught me that a good knowledge of english is no good if you cannot inspire or manage your students. I am now far more aware that it is my duty to try and motivate the students, be friendly and enthusiastic, and always put emphasis on positive feedback. I also now understand that some students may not wish to participate in class and that these students should not be pushed to do so. The numerous ideas on lesson games and activities have taught me that making the class room fun and interactive is the most effective way to get students to participate and remember the work. I am also very aware of my hand gestures and the way I talk. I will now try and incorporate gestures, mimes and props into my instructions, and use a clear, modulated voice whilst speaking at a tempered pace. This course has also forced me to reassess my former ideas of english teaching and effective communication. It has highlighted the fact that the needs of foreign language students are quite different to those of first language students, and that foreign language students often require very different teaching methods. For example, my english education involved a lot of single-student work. Through this course I have learnt that this would be an unsuccessful method of teaching if applied to foreign students and that pair- or group-work activities would be far more effective. This course has effectively changed the way I would have presented class. As a result, I will always follow the ESA lesson plan (straight-arrow, boomerang and patchwork) as the importance of engage and activate phases, in addition to a study phase, has been impressed upon me. I will also always ensure that students do some form of pair- or group-work in the lessons, and will encourage class discussion as much as possible. I will ensure that lessons precede one another in a logical manner, with weekly-lessons falling under a common theme. I will also try and ensure that there is continuity in the lessons and that each lessons builds on the previous lesson’s work. I am also likely to hold weekly revision tests. I am very aware that I must develop all factors of english and not just english grammar. As such I will try to exercise as many aspects of english as I effectively can, within any given lesson.
