I have learned several specific ideas for activities and common classroom situations, but more importantly, I have learned useful techniques for creating and maintaining a good classroom atmosphere in which students can effectively learn while having a good time. Some details I had not considered in depth that have helped improve the atmosphere in the classroom include my posture and positioning in the classroom during different activities and being sure to give instructions or explanations of handouts before giving them to the class. Also, the Engage, Study, Activate lesson plan format has been very valuable to me in helping me organize and plan lessons that interest the students and keep the class running smoothly. I have already put what I’ve learned from this course into practice teaching at two high schools in japan. Some of the troubleshooting sections and information about different types of learners have been valuable to me as well, as I teach both at a fairly high-level academic school and a commercial/vocational school with less-advanced students. The ESA lesson plan format works well in getting the quiet, more studious students ready to participate, and with only minor adjustments, getting the already energetic vocational students focused and interested in the value of english as a means to play games as well as communicating.
