There are many important characteristics that a successful teacher needs to acquire. I believe the most important aspects of being a teacher are to be knowledgeable on the subject and to have the qualities to motivate students. In order to be able to motivate the students, the teacher must be motivated him or herself and therefore, the teacher must like teaching. The teacher must also have charisma and be able to entertain a classroom full of students, especially to a younger audience. Being able to speak well publicly is also a very important characteristic a teacher must have. The role of the teacher, however, is not limited to the classroom. Especially for younger students, I believe it is part of the teacher’s responsibility to present themselves as a good role model for the children and to help educate the children beyond the subjects taught in school. As with any other job, it is extremely important for a person to be knowledgeable in their area or field. This applies especially to teachers because they are in the position of teaching others. Not knowing the material not only slows the class down, but according to my experience, a student will probably have difficulty learning if they cannot look up to the teacher and if the teacher is not knowledgeable, it is hard for a student to look up to him or her. Their motivation would probably decrease rather than increase. Although it is not a necessity, it is a very big advantage if a teacher loves his or her job of teaching. Being negative about the job not only makes the teacher miserable, but it also influences the students. When a teacher acts as if he does not want to be at the classroom teaching, young students, who are probably not even that motivated to begin with, will probably lose interest and slack off. Also, if the teacher is not enthusiastic about what they are learning, students will also be bored. Since younger children have a shorter attention span, they will tend to get bored quicker. Since learning about history or science may not be the most interesting subject for younger students, a teacher should know how to make the classroom atmosphere bright and make the class an enjoyable time. Being creative with teaching is also a great way to catch the attention of the students. It is important for a teacher to be outgoing and speak well publicly so that he or she can incorporate and encourage students to become a part of the class and participate in activities. The role of a teacher is very important especially for grade school because it is where growing children will spend most of their time. Therefore, the teacher should not only have all the characteristics mentioned above, but also should become a role model for the children. A good teacher should incorporate moral behavior and social etiquette into their teachings in addition to the school curriculum.
