Why Complete a tefl course (8) “Why are you taking a tefl course?” is the question asked by some of my friends, family members and colleagues when I tell them I am taking an online certification class. My usual response is, “I am taking a tefl course in order to teach english in Korea and travel the world”, but there is more behind it than that. Some are understanding while some wonder why I would do such a thing when I have no Korean language background at all. The thought is a bit nerve-racking, but I think it would be an opportunity of a lifetime. Research states that the top five reasons to take a tefl course and teach english abroad which includes doing something rewarding on your travels, learning a new language, learning new skills, discovering a new culture and meeting similar people (bunac.org). More or less, these are also my reasons for going abroad. To address the first reason, after recently graduating from University of California Santa Barbara, with a major in Sociology and minors in Asian American Studies and Applied Psychology, it is an exciting (yet a bit scary) time for me. I would like to travel while I am young and while I have less obligations. I am very grateful for the opportunity to attain a degree in higher education and would like to teach young children english and realize their potential. I am also interested in some volunteer opportunities abroad in my spare time when I am not teaching. I believe this will be a journey of a lifetime. Furthermore, learning a new language and discovering a new culture is another reason why I am taking a tefl course (bunac.org). I must take a tefl course to show I am knowledgeable in english to earn the certificate to teach to students abroad. Upon completion of the course, I am able to travel to another country and immerse in their culture and learn their language. I see it as an exchange in culture and language where I am teaching them english while simultaneously they are teaching me skills and I am learning Hangul. I would like to live and breathe in Korean culture which I believe will help me learn better. Another reason why I am taking a tefl course so I can teach english abroad is so I can meet like minded people (bunac.org). From prior experience, I studied abroad in the United Kingdom in 2012 for two months. There, I met other adventurous people who also shared a passion of exploring. Upon return, I got involved with my school's Education Abroad Program as a Global Intern where we shared the love for traveling and as a place to talk about our travels after our friends got bored. I have talked to some colleagues who are teaching in the same program as I am and they highly recommend it. Overall, I am glad I took this course because it was very helpful and beneficial. Initially, the lesson planning was very slow for me, but over time as I had to plan more lessons it became much easier. I can walk away from this course with a few lesson plans I can actually apply to the classroom and have the skills to plan more. I believe the grammar structures and the tenses (past, present and continuous) were important as well. I remember learning the tenses in elementary school, but after speaking english for awhile it becomes second nature that you forget about the structure and rules behind it. I also liked the aspect of the tutor available to you so you can receive feedback and and see your strong and weak points. My friend recommended this course to me and it is much affordable than the in-class tefl course if one cannot take that for any reason.
