This unit focuses on the past tenses which indicate action that occurred in the past and which does not extend into the present. The biggest problem for learners appears to be the fact that native speakers do not frequently use the past perfect contrary to what the learners have been instructed. Even teachers who are native speakers have not reached a consensus on whether the past perfect is more suitable than the past simple in certain sentences.
