Examples of reported speech from television news videos or newspaper reports could be used to engage students. Using a table showing how verb tenses change between direct and reported speech would support students in rewriting given direct speech sentences to practice and increase confidence. Once consolidated videoing students reporting on a current event of interest to them as a new caster would be an activity that they could write at home or as an active part of one or more lessons. The concept of back shifting when using time expressions will take time for students to understand and each one should be taught separately and thoroughly during the study stage using lots of examples that enable the students to become familiar with and practice
