Conditionals need to be taught explicitly for students to understand the slight differences in usage. Using very practical examples and activities using zero and first conditionals that help the students to put in context concepts such as actions with conditions and consequences that are irrefutable would be a good start. Once students are confident and fluent in understanding and making sentences then moving onto the second and third conditions using hypothetical actions and outcomes/results will build on their understanding and usage of the correct tense and verbs in conditionals. Mixed conditionals can then be studied and compared to third conditionals. A lot of dialogue needs to be used as examples of using conditionals for the students to hear and understand. Matching beginnings and ends of pre prepared sentences and gap finishing the second part of known and familiar sentences will give students confidence and repetitive practice before attempting to create their own sentences. With older and higher level students who are confident then giving them moral dilemmas in a conditional form should generate some interesting discussion
