Although used everyday and without thinking, the teacher of English needs to understand the embedded rules of grammar. It is not necessary to be an encyclopedia of grammar, but it is important to be able to present clearly, and with sympathy to speakers of other languages, the basic rules governing the relationship between words in a sentence. I have had a strong background in grammar with many years of Latin, but a review of the correct ways to label parts of speech has been useful. Knowing how to use words is very different that categorizing them for teaching. I feel that I have gone over the basics of English grammar. This unit served as a great refresher for grammar learned years ago. I believe that it is very beneficial to freshen up on grammar skills Before teaching other people these skills.
