Why Complete a tefl course? I have learned so much and gained so many important skills by taking a tefl course and I believe that it has made me a much better teacher, which is why I chose to write my article on this topic. Taking a tefl course is vital for anyone wishing to teach english as it teaches you grammar and also gives you important skills in the classroom. A tefl course teaches you how to organize a lesson plan, and how to keep your class interested in the topic and manage your class. It goes as far as to teach you how to choose a course book and course materials for your class and integrate authentic materials as well as evaluate students, which is very important both at the beginning and at the end of a course. Many schools and students just assume that native english speakers automatically know the grammar and are able to teach it. I have worked with the Shenker method of teaching english and I specifically remember one time a student asked me what the difference between the present perfect and the past simple. I didn't know how to explain this simple grammar rule to him and I was completely embarrassed and humiliated! It was at that point when I decided to start studying english grammar on my own, and then I started this tefl course. I now have a better grasp on grammar and I am better prepared to answer my students' questions. I am a more knowledgeable and therefore more confident teacher because of this. This course has given me a solid foundation, which I plan to deepen. Another very important aspect of this tefl course is learning how to plan a lesson. Structured lessons are easier for the student and are more organized. A teacher must know how to properly prepare for a lesson before it starts, they must understand how to get the students engaged in the new topic, teach it to them, and reinforce it with an activating activity. Making learning enjoyable and fun for students is a very important and a tefl course gives great ideas and example of classroom games, and also gives important rules and guidelines for creating your own games. Also, schools may ask teachers to write out and present lesson plans for their classes detailing the activities they will do during the class, along with goals and time estimations. If you haven't learned about how to plan or structure a lesson this would be an arduous task. Once during an interview I was asked to speak about a course book and/or specific publisher that I preferred for my course books. I simply responded by saying that I used the books provided by the school and that I have never been asked to choose my own course material before. Sometimes a school will ask you to choose your own course material and others will give you a book you must work with. It is important to know what to look for in a course book and be able to supplement it in case of any shortcomings, as well as giving your students extra material when they are having trouble grasping a certain topic. Taking a tefl course has taught me so much, and I am a better teacher for it. Without this course, I would feel completely lost in the classroom and I would not have been able to teach the classes and students I have now. Seeing my students learn and succeed inspires me to try to be the best teacher I can be, and taking a tefl course has been a great choice. My only regret is not taking it sooner.
