Through reading this unit I have learned that the English language is a great deal more complex than I ever had given it credit for. In school I had been taught that a noun was a person place or thing. Now I have a greater understanding of the term noun. A noun can be a state of being, a person, place, animal, or quality. Also the idea of nouns being classified as countable and uncountable was not something I had thought of Before. This section gives the perspective teacher a greater understanding of what needs to be taught as well as the pains the student will have to undergo to memorize all these diverse and irregular rules. I may have had a brief understanding of most of the parts of speech but the level of depth this unit went into examining each was immensely helpful. Prepositions, adverbs, auxiliary verbs, articles, pronouns and possessive adjectives are only some of the many parts of speech that I learned more about in this chapter. I no longer think of japanese counters as annoying, there is just as much if not more irregularity in the English language system as there is in japanese.
