During the time spent in this course, I've honestly been introduced to more information than I can absorb in one class. I've been given the foundations to strengthen my firm understanding of the english language and was instructed on how to explain parts of speech and verb tenses to each of the seven levels of experience among english learners. Teaching any subject requires more of the teacher than simply knowing the information though, and this course has given me primers on classroom management, troubleshooting problems with student learning, and how to provide reliable instruction for special groups like children and business english learners. I have learned not only from reading, but also through observation as was required in lesson 10. Most importantly, I was exposed to the reliable “engage, study, activate” system of learning and how to employ it in the classroom for effective lesson planning. All this information has been very beneficial in theory, but it needs to be effectively applied to be useful. From the very beginning, I will be relying on the ESA methods for structuring my lessons and will be utilizing patchwork and boomerang versions when the lesson material requires a carefully crafted approach. Regardless of the level of english, I will be taking special care to utilize intonation and take special care to regulate my tone to be energetic and encouraging for the students themselves. I've learned that one of the very best ways to establish rapport among your students is to genuinely enjoy being present. I will also utilize a variety of devices for teaching in the classroom (depending on what is available to me), but have already developed a preference for overhead projectors due to their ease of use and ability to maintain facing with the class at all times! A good balance of reading, listening, writing, and speaking exercises will be scattered throughout every lesson I plan in order to best introduce my future students to the full array of english speaking skills required to be successful.
