I have gained a lot by doing this course. Firstly, I realized that I can still apply myself to intense study after many years outside the classroom! I feel I have gained the essential tools for teaching english to an array of different students and in different students. I feel prepared to start constructing my own lessons, even without a course book and feel confident I have the skills to begin teaching (ie: I don't think I need anything else to begin teaching, the course has covered everything). I also feel a great sense of achievement. Learning the grammar of my own native language has been extremely helpful in understanding why my friends make mistakes when speaking english (few are native english speakers) which has prepared me well for identifying problem areas for Europeans speaking or learning english. I also believe this has been an immense help for my understanding of the structures of other European languages I have learnt in the past and am continuing to improve. I plan to put the knowledge I have gained from this course to use in Western Europe and possibly central/south America. I have other commitments from April until October, but hope that next winter will see me teaching in seville, spain. Fortunately, I have a lot of friends here in Venice, eager to learn, or improve their english that I can use as guinea pigs in the next two months, which I am looking forward to doing. This course has shown me that there is some serious planning that goes into teaching an effective english course, and that my mother's career as a teacher, really deserves a lot more credit! I don't know how people can think that just because they speak english, they can go on a working holiday to a non-english speaking country and start sharing their knowledge in exchange for money. I know I used to think this way and can see now, that I was very, very wrong.
