In Unit 2 of this course, the authors provide an overview and discussion of the following parts of speech: both countable and uncountable nouns; adjectives, including superlatives and comparatives; definite and indefinite articles; verbs (transitive, intransitive, and auxiliary);adverbs; pronouns; and prepositions/conjunctions. While I was earning my linguistics degree as an undergraduate student, I studied many of the details of grammar and parts of speech. What I most appreciated about this unit, however, was the emphasis on which aspects of English grammar can be particularly difficult for English language learners to grasp (e.g., using the proper spelling/position of adverbs, or putting a series of adjectives in the correct order). As an ESOL instructor, I would like to design activities where students must re-organize sentences into the proper word order. For instance, I could print out individual words onto large sheets of paper and use magnets to attach them to a blackboard, so that students can physically readjust sentences accordingly.
