The country I have chosen is spain. Some of the problems that would arise for learner of english in spain are with: 1. Words in the english language that are not spoken how they are written: E.g. could-coud, tea- t, to-tu. 2. Words that would contain silent letters: E.g. gnaw, write, island, doubt. 3. Words that look the same but are pronounced differently: E.g. • WIND - noun, moving air outdoors, part of weather. WIND - verb, a twisting motion, as with a clock spring. • READ - past tense verb, got meaning from written words READ - present tense of same verb. • POLISH - as a noun, a liquid used to clean and shine hard surfaces. as a verb, the act of cleaning or shining. • POLISH - adjective, a person or thing from Poland. 4. Words that sound the same but are spelled differently. E.g. • byte, bite, bight • seen, scene • hear, here • sense, cents, scents • their, there, they're tefl teaching shows us practical and comprehendible techniques and skills needed to prepare a person to work with non native speaking english students (or english speaking students) and teach them a solid foundation of english grammar and language skills. tefl teaching is not only focused on young learners or beginners, but on a different range of students. For example: young learners, adult learner-both at different levers (beginners, low intermediate inter-mediate etc.). english for the classroom and business english. spanish people have a problem when “rr” appearing in a word. As in spanish “rr” sounds are made by doubling and vibrating your tongue. Therefore words such as “sorry, hurry and curry” are pronounced with a vibrating sound, almost like if there was more than two ‘r's – sorrrry. Also, getting pronunciation wrong with some words may leave openings for ridicule or sarcasm. Thus, leading to lack of confidence and not speaking for fear of making mistakes. Also, in the long run may affect future employment. Literature used in tefl teaching often provides a more conversational style. children's literature in particular sometimes provides subtle clues to pronunciation, through rhyming and other word play. Thus providing more interesting classes. Methodology used in tefl teaching is essential when working with young spanish learners. As material is produced for working in groups or alone, allows for more contact between students leading to a better atmosphere. Another big problem for people of spain to learn english is accents. Not only do we have different accents from different countries – ireland, england, Scotland and American – but also different accents within each country. E.g. ireland –Kerry, Dublin, Cork etc. Spaniards also have the difficulty with UK english and American english. Words, although sounding the same, can be spelt differently, or the same word can mean something completely different. Colour- UK english and Color in American english. Enquiry –UK english and Inquiry in American english. Bill-UK english- An itemized list or statement of fees or charges e.g. Bill from a restaurant. Bill-American english is a piece of paper money e.g. 20 dollar bill. One of the advantages of tefl teaching is when teaching grammar and tenses. In depth information in given on how to show students the use of tenses. For example in the spanish language there are no ‘irregular verbs'. One of the rules for past simple is adding‘d' or ‘ed'. The problem with this is that a lot of verbs are irregular and can change form completely or cannot be changed by simply adding‘d' or ‘ed'. E.g. see-saw, have-had, know-knew, find-found, buy-bought, do-did, go-went. tefl teaching also allows us to show students how to use a dictionary and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Here is where we can deal with the problem of pronunciation and accent. It is easier if a non native english speaker looks for a word in the dictionary they will be able to read the correct pronunciation.
