Why take a tefl course? One simple answer could be to get a job teaching english. Another answer might be to teach english in a foreign country. Or possibly it's just to get certified if you're already teaching somewhere. Whatever your reasons may be to take a tefl course, the outcome is all the same. You will receive the tools to be able to teach english as a foreign language just about anywhere. But is that it? I mean, if you know your reasons for doing it, then I think it's not a hard choice. But what if you were on the fence about deciding to take a course? What could influence you more to get over that fence and just divide right in? I believe it's what tefl has to offer. I believe that taking a tefl course would be beneficial to anyone who is truly interested in teaching english as a foreign language. I'm speaking as a two-year teacher without any previous teaching experience. I reside in South Korea and before coming here, decided not to take any certification courses for the fact that I didn't need one and I may only do this for one year. I was able to get through my classes by looking up resources online, asking friends and teachers, as well as trail-and-error in my classroom. My main purpose in getting a tefl certification was to up my pay when I renew my contact. Going into the course, I already knew a few things that I had learned from my two years teaching here in Korea. Nevertheless, there were many topics that I wasn't too sure about. But after going over them and learning how they can be taught, I was able to get a better understanding. Plus, the material is broken down in such a matter, which is easy to follow, and not an overload to stress about. If you are a first year teacher or someone like myself, taking a course will go a long way. First, you will be informed about what to teach and how it should be taught. You will receive training on many different ways to get your students engaged in the material and how to keep them engaged. Secondly, because you will know what to teach and how to do it, this will give you confidence. Being confident in the classroom is a very important element. If you don't have confidence in yourself, your students will see this and could easily lose interest in learning. Lastly, even though it may not be a requirement, getting certified should be a necessity. If you want to be a teacher, teaching english as a second language, you should get proper training. There may be topics or other things that you can't explain to your students. This may simply be because you don't know the rules or why we english speakers say the things we do. All of these doubts or concerns could be addressed and dealt with if you were to take a tefl course. That being said, I originally took the course to earn more money. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that I've learn quite a bit and it's helped make me a better teacher. If you're going to be a teacher, you should take the necessary requirements in order to be successful. If you're going to be a native speaking english teacher, then you should take a tefl course.
