The teaching of the English language is really hard because of all of the rules that have to be followed. It is not just the rules though that make it difficult. It is all of the nuances that come into play with the language. For example just in the area of nouns not only do you have to know that a noun is a person, place, thing or idea but you also have to know if it is a proper noun or a common noun. Is it a countable noun or an uncountable noun? Plural nouns end with a s but that is not always true because sometime you drop the y and add an I followed by an es. This could be discussed with all eight parts of speech but for the sake of this discussion I will end by saying that teaching the rules of English to ESL students will be a real challenge because of all the rules that have to be followed.
